Take Britains Three Peaks Challenge With Your Group

Is your group up to it? The three peaks challenge is climbing the three highest peaks in the U.k. within 24 hours. The highest peak in each of the three countries in the U.K. is climbed reaching the summit and going back down and transporting your team and kit to the next peak. Ben Nevis in Scotland Scafel Pike in the Lake District of Britain and Mount Snowdon in Wales.

While teams have been known to cycle between the peaks and there is even a Yacht Race it is highly recommended that your group hire an organized and experienced coach outfit to arrange logistics. Many are available and with 450 miles of driving having the benefit of a coach outfit that knows the specifics of the route to each peak is invaluable.

Since all three peaks are engaged in one twenty four hour period there won’t be any need for lodging during the challenge. Prior to and afterwards a good hotel or at a minimum a decent bed and breakfast may be an excellent idea. Fort William at the base of Ben Nevin has ample hotels from one to three stars as well as Bed and Breakfast accommodations. Mount Snowdon is normally the last peak to be conquered and this area of Wales has good hotels and more than one outstanding five star Bed and Breakfast. Reservations well in advance are recommended.

Once the logistics of where to stage how to get between peaks and where to get the much needed rest at the end are sorted out you need to look inward. Your group will need to have a decent level of fitness and stamina. This is not the outing for the curious or those “wanting to get into shape”. Leadership is another consideration. People will get tired; weather is likely to include some precipitation and fog. Is there someone in your group who knows what to do in case of hypothermia exposure or similar emergencies? General first aid knowledge should be universal among your members.

Will all of your kit be carried in and out or will some it be rented hired in country? What are your routes for each peak and particularly your descent on Snowdon? Folks have gotten lost on Snowdon. GPS perhaps?
On the upside this experience is highly rewarding. Teams are frequently sponsored with proceeds going to worthwhile charities. The blog space is replete with happy accounts of teams who organized an intelligent plan and put it into place. The beauty of these places is not inconsiderable.

On balance the three peaks challenge is not a light undertaking for any group. Those seeking a team building or “bonding” experience might want to go another direction. For those groups seeking a quality challenge that want to test known skills the three peaks challenge is just the ticket. Gaining sponsors for a charitable cause is possible. An engaging experience is a certainty. Three countries three peaks 450 miles in between twenty four hours. They don’t call it a challenge for nothing.
